EdTech at OCDE

The Educational Technology Department of the Orange County Department of Education is a resource for all educators in Orange County. Two program specialists, three coordinators, a media department, and support personnel, including interns from the UCI computer science department, work together under the administration of Sandra Lapham to offer support in the areas of curriculum, professional development, infrastructure, funding, and program evaluation. These efforts support student achievement through the integration of technology for teaching and learning. Below are some examples of programs and services provided by the department.

Curriculum

Through the Educational Technology Showcase Program, which includes both the Showcase Grant and the Showcase Festival, the Educational Technology Department, in partnership with CTAP Region 9, offers support and opportunities for showcasing innovative implementations of educational technology.

In an effort to provide high quality, digital content to students and teachers, the Educational Technology Department has collaborated with organizations such as the Bowers Museum, California Dairy Council, Aquarium of the Pacific, Opera Pacific, and Inside the Outdoors to hosts a collection of free, educational, copyright-friendly media resources at
www.kitZu.com.

Online Learning

The Orange County Department of Education is offering an online learning management system that enhances face-to-face classes and provides full online courses. OC Online is a suite of online tools that enables educators to easily create enhanced, collaborative learning experiences and opportunities for 21st Century learners. The numerous components of OC Online engage students by providing anytime, anywhere access to resources and learning. Teachers are able to focus on content and learning, not grading as tests and quizzes can be graded automatically. Finally, the virtual office hours and calendars promote student accountability and encourage parents to take a more active role in their child’s education.

This fall OC Online will be offering educators and students access to University of California College Prep Online courses and support materials. These courses will be available to all OC Online users throughout CTAP Region 9.
